Bold Tudor Bathroom Remodel in Portland, OR
Neil Kelly in-house design consultant Janel Campbell spearheaded this innovative bathroom remodel in our returning client’s 1926 Tudor-style home, creating clever space-saving workarounds and selecting bold tile choices that pair seamlessly with the home’s architectural style.

Project Objectives and Client Wishlist
Because this Portland home does not have a primary bathroom suite, our objective was to achieve the amenities of a primary bath while also sharing it as the family bath. The goal was to update all of the bathroom’s finishes and to separate the bathtub and shower—without changing the existing bathroom footprint.
Our clients’ wishlist for this bathroom remodel included:
- Separate bathing and showering
- Updated finishes
- Increased storage space

Design Challenges and Solutions
With this project, our team had to work within a confined footprint; we couldn’t move the walls, we had to include the existing skylight in the design, and moving plumbing and electrical was difficult because the previously remodeled kitchen was on the floor below. Additionally, we had to balance the amount of storage needed with the allotted showering and bathing space.
Our solution to balance all of these elements was to create a wet room, which would combine the spaces, allow for the largest shower, and have the least amount of impact on the floor below. We also designed a custom vanity that utilized the available vertical space in the room for additional storage.
Special Features, Customizations, and Finished Results
Design features in this bathroom include a slipper tub, which adds fluidity with its design, a patterned floor tile that provides period-accurate personality, and rich green wall tile that adds a feeling of calmness to the space. The clients’ young boys play with squirt guns in the tub and the new wet bath makes for easy clean up, while the shower niche adds storage for both shampoo and kids’ toys.

Janel Campbell grew up in her father’s wood shop with the smell of sawdust in her nose; and a creative and welcoming home that always had something baking in the oven (an in-home business decorating wedding cakes!). It seemed only natural for her to combine the two elements into her passion for design/build; helping others find ways to make their house a home.
With a bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, a Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer, as well as Certified Aging in Place Specialist, Janel brings 20+ years of remodeling experience to her team and clients. She asks meaningful questions to learn the challenges, collaborates, and provides expertise; then carries through with her strong attention to detail. Her dedication to building relationships brings her clients back time and time again.
Janel’s award-winning designs have been featured in Oregon Home, Portrait of Portland, 1859, and KBB magazine. She was honored to be included as one of Professional Remodeler magazine’s “Top 40 under 40”. When not designing, she can be found spending time with family, in the garden, paddling on the water, and in the kitchen preparing something tasty. Her passion is HOME.
