Custom Cabin Remodel in Bend, OR
This whole house remodel by the Neil Kelly team transformed a dark and dated home into a cozy cabin in the woods. Our clients lived in their A-frame home with horse acreage for almost 30 years without upgrading, and after many happy memories in the home and property, they were able to make their home just what they wanted.

Project Objectives and Client Wishlist
As empty nesters, our clients didn’t need to add square footage, so we focused on reconfiguring the existing space. We transformed the previously dark and confusing entry into a bright and welcoming area. The former mudroom, which was largely occupied by the laundry, was reimagined into a functional mudroom, laundry area, and powder room, which already existed. Sliding doors now separate these spaces, creating a practical and harmonious flow. The kitchen was also fully transformed, completing the home’s renewal.
All new windows, log siding, flooring, and lighting throughout the home transformed it into a sweet and cozy cabin in the woods, complete with redone outbuildings (we remodeled a small cottage on the property so they would have someplace to live during the remodel), landscaping, and fencing.
Our clients’ wishlist for this remodel included:
- Open entryway
- Mudroom
- Laundry room
- Powder bath
- Kitchen remodel
- New flooring
- New windows
- Log siding
Design Challenges and Solutions
Due to a full second-floor overhead, the space felt dark and crowded without soaring A-frame ceilings to take advantage of. We worked within the parameters of the existing footprint and put windows on the two gable ends to bring light into the space. Another challenge was creating gracious spaces that would stay beautiful for this family (and two Great Pyrenees dogs) who would rather spend time outdoors than keep the house clean. From the wood floors and tile flooring to the wood paneling, every surface had to be super durable, as the dogs roam freely inside and out.
Special Features, Customizations, and Finished Results
The owners wanted to keep the wood paneling, wood ceilings, and wood floors and fell in love with natural hickory cabinets. To keep the light bouncing around, we introduced large window walls on both ends of the house, ingenious LED strip lighting concealed in the beams, lighter-toned large format tile flooring, and lots of added indirect lighting above and below cabinets. We also added carpet to the bedrooms and stairs. Horse-themed at every opportunity, but not over the top, we created many custom touches that reflect owners’ love for horses and the countryside, like the custom stone mosaic in the kitchen backsplash.
Special features and customizations for this whole house remodel included:
- Waterworks kitchen faucet
- Crystal Cabinets
- Caesarstone from Imagine Stoneworks
- Kitchen island with a custom-made dining table that can be moved apart from the island
- Steam shower in primary bath
- Custom office built-ins
- Lighting fixtures
- Customized entry bench and coat/boot rack
- Sierra Pacific windows and doors
