Seattle Custom Home
Luxurious entertainment spaces are matched with Northwest Contemporary styling in this Mercer Island custom home project.
Design Objectives / Client Needs
The client is an investment group led by Mei Young, who is a Seattle-area real estate broker.
The group had owned the land for some time, and done smaller projects to prepare the property for development, like demo the original house, fill in the pool, and install a required stormwater system.
As the real estate market grew stronger, the investment group felt it was a great time to finish the project by building a single family home and putting it on the market.
Design Challenges
With any high end spec home, finding the right balance of style and cost effectiveness is crucial. In this case, the site itself also made it challenging to fit the desired home and amenities into the available space.
Products, materials, and colors needed to fit the current market, have mass appeal, and be long lasting in both style and durability.
The architecture was designed by Jeff McNaughton of McNaughton Associates.
Construction was coordinated by Neil Kelly Seattle General Manager Jason Garrood; interior finishes were selected by Neil Kelly Design Associate Sophorn Hernandez, along with the investment group.
Design Solutions
Overall, the home is designed for entertainment, featuring an open floor plan, deck off the great room, and guest accommodations.
The main floor has an amazing great room with fireplace, an expansive kitchen, formal dining room, and a nook for more intimate gatherings. There is also a den that can function as an office, library, or hobby space. A guest bedroom includes private bath. A large 4-car garage has plenty of space for storage.
The upper floor has a massive primary suite including large walk-in closet, 5-piece primary bath, and enclosed water closet. 3 additional bedrooms and a bonus room fill out the upper floor, along with a laundry room and hall bath. Bedrooms 3 & 4 share a full-sized “Jack and Jill” bathroom, which is convenient since they are furthest down the hall.
Color palette is neutral so that it can accommodate many different tastes and styles. Materials are contemporary and timeless.
The elongated kitchen backsplash tile was chosen for its elegance and simplicity. Luxurious 12×24” tile adorns the bathroom walls and floors.
Countertops are white quartz throughout except for in the laundry room.
We used LCM Cabinets in Monroe, WA for the cabinets.
The investment group added some custom details of their own, such as bookshelves.
