Funky-Sophisticate

The existing kitchen had worn materials, a less than functional layout, insufficient counter space and storage, and a firm belief in environmental responsibility lead her to remodel.

Client Requests:

  • A design that reflects the artistic "funky- sophisticate" nature of this musician client.
  • Use environmentally friendly products and building practices.
  • Reorganize the galley kitchen within the existing space to maximize function.
  • Customize counter heights
Seating for two in the kitchen

Design Solution:

  • A primary goal was for the new kitchen to blend seamlessly with the vintage 1950’s ambience of the home. This was achieved through an urbane mix of Bauhaus and contemporary country as exemplified by the unexpected counterpoint of the avant-garde geometry of the glass tile backsplash with the chicken wire accented wall cabinets flanking the porcelain farm house sink.
  • Demolished building materials, cabinets and old appliances were recycled to the local ReBuilding Center.
  • The locally sourced concrete countertops are made from abundant, non toxic materials; fly ash concrete, silica fume and recycled concrete.
  • The locally sourced myrtlewood butcher block countertop was sustainably harvested from small, responsibly managed family forest lands. It tops the seating area overlooking the garden.
  • Earth Friendly Cabinets are by Neil Kelly Cabinets.
  • Cork flooring was used in the kitchen
  • New energy star appliances
  • New energy efficient windows
  • Low VOC paint was used throughout
