This University-area cottage was "modernized" and expanded in the Fifties, stripping it of any charm. The homeowner wanted to restore a "cottage-y" feeling to this small home and did not want a "vanilla" color palette. Upon spotting her fire engine red small appliances and accessories already in place, I immediately realized -cottage with punch! Okay!
Lots of furniture details were included in the glazed, white painted cabinets with Cottage Black beadboard accents. Wire-brushed Cambrian Black granite countertops, combined with Madrona butcher block sections in key prep areas set a background able to stand up to the red accents. Red and wheat colored Marmoleum checkerboard floors finished the look where simple subway tiles, with a crackle glaze finish and architectural accent trim, add dignity to this small space.
Every inch of space counted, so every inch of storage needed to work efficiently! A reproduction iron heat grill, mounted on the low ceiling, conceals an exhaust vent powered by an exterior mounted blower.
The reproduction schoolhouse-style light fixtures, with red-striped shades, add the finishing touch, along with excellent task lighting. Counter surfaces and cabinet interiors are illuminated by concealed puck lights. Walls and ceilings were finished off in a soft Cypress Green to completely dispel any thought of a boring color palette!
