This Mt. Tabor home was transformed from what could only be described as "Pirate Ship Modern" into NW contemporary.
The existing home lacked natural light, had heavy wood, dark floors, massive brick fireplace and an iron gate separating the living and dining rooms. The remodel created a serene Northwest contemporary ambiance by using glass, slate, limestone, and bamboo, integrating as much natural light as possible, and a contemporary color palette with touches of texture in tile and crystal accent lighting.
The homeowners’ list of desired improvements was lengthy. We began with a feasibility study, creating priorities and a realistic budget.
The upper level remodel included:
• a master suite with a spa-style master bath
• walk-in closet, laundry, powder bath, entry way
• removing a wall between the living and dining rooms to provide an open, airy feel as well as improving circulation.
The lower level remodel included:
• a family room
• three bedrooms
• a full bath
• combining a small study and utility room to create a workout room
An open-riser stairway of steel, glass, and recycled Fir (from the previous "pirate ship" staircase) was essential in creating the contemporary interior and allows light to disperse between floors. The fireplace was made sleek and given depth with high gloss and matte paint.
Sustainable materials used include bamboo, cork and marmoleum flooring, low-VOC paint throughout the house, and a new rainwater harvesting system. The home was made more climate-friendly by adding insulation and other efficiency measures, as well as adding awning windows for ventilation and additional windows for seasonal light.
The work was phased by improving the lower level and then completing the work on the upper level, allowing the home to be occupied throughout the remodel.
